You will need five tools and can check your intonation in four simple steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tools Needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need the following tools to check and fix intonation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accurate guitar tuner that shows the frequency of each note in Hertz (Hz)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guitar cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flathead screwdriver or Allen wrench to adjust the saddles in your bridge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New strings (optional)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A quiet space to work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With these tools, you\u2019re ready to check your intonation!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Tune Your Guitar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since intonation is about your guitar being in tune with itself, you have to be sure it is in tune. \u201cIn tune\u201d means that the open strings are hitting the exact frequency they should. That means you need to intonate your guitar. I know it can sound overwhelming, but you can intonate a guitar in a few quick, easy steps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let\u2019s define a couple of terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bridge and Saddles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjusting the intonation is essentially shortening or lengthening a string. You accomplish this by changing the bridge position. To decrease the string\u2019s length, move the saddle forward toward the neck. A flat pitch is lower than the harmonic, and reducing the length raises the pitch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can remember this by memorizing the two F\u2019s: \u201cFlat equals Forward.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, so how do you do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Protect Your Guitar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be using the flathead screwdriver or Allen wrench to adjust the guitar\u2019s bridge saddles. Any time you are bringing sharp tools near your guitar, you want to take precautions to ensure you don\u2019t slip up and ruin the finish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a soft rag or cloth to place over the guitar\u2019s body, flush with the bridge\u2019s edges. Now you\u2019re protected from accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: If Your Fretted Note is Sharp<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your string was sharp, you need to lower the pitch. Increasing the length also increases tension and could cause the string to break. De-tune the string first to protect it. Check with the manufacturer (read some documentation) on the type of bridge it is in order to adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: If Your Fretted Note is Flat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your string was flat, you need to raise the pitch. To do this, you need to decrease the string\u2019s length by moving the saddle forward towards the neck. If you travel with your guitar or experience extreme temperature changes or humidity, test out the intonation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also go through all the steps of checking and setting intonation whenever\u00a0you change your guitar strings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Does it Cost to Intonate a Guitar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have to weigh the costs and benefits of time spent on our instruments.
